Examples of pattern targets . . .

Paper target from a steel pattern plate, low resolution low-cost camera:
  • This is an example of a good quality image. The target material is wallpaper cut and taped to give the required size.

  • After some experimenting embossed paper with the embossed side against the pattern plate was found to work very well. White masking tape has been used to join the front face. The rear is taped using cloth tape for strength. Time consuming but effective!

  • The camera used was a Nikon Coolpix with 2M-pixel resolution.

  • Note the even illumination and lack of creases and folds in the paper.

  • Also shown are an aiming point (cross near the centre) and horizontal and vertical marks denoting distances of 30". These allow the software to correctly scale the image and pellet marks.

Plastic film target from a free standing frame, high resolution high-cost camera:
  • This is an example of a borderline-acceptable image. The target material is plastic roll. It is low cost and fast to use but needs care when attaching to the frame.

  • The camera used was a Nikon SLR 6M-pixel resolution with superb focussing abilities.

  • Note that some pellets are very near the edge of the target and some most likely off completely. This test would have been better at a slightly closer range. All the pellets would be collected and the area the camera needed to focus over would be reduced. This would improve the resolution of the pellets and make it easier for the camera to focus all the pellets.

  • Also shown are an aiming point (mark near the centre) and horizontal and vertical marks denoting distances of 30". These allow the software to correctly scale the image and pellet marks.
